Griefer – You could be one

Griefing: The act of misusing available resources to ruin the experience for others.

Griefing is a massive problem in Second Life, but what many don’t know is that some of the griefers don’t know themself that they are griefing. Take for example the following scenario:

You are at a club and while camming around you notice a box under the floor. The box is clickable and has the tooltip description “Click me to rez”. What do you do? Most people let it be, or don’t notice it at all, it looks just like a regular primbox, but you decide to try it out. I mean, it’s there, in a public area, so it HAS to be for everyone to use, right?

WRONG!

You clicked it and the whole club derezes, apart from a few items here and there. You have now become a griefer.

Rez-boxes, helper objects and other scripted objects can be found all over SL, they are usually hidden and that’s for a reason. The owner don’t want you to find it, but there is only so much you can do to conceal it and still have it in the area it needs to be.

If you see an object that you don’t know what it is or what it does, stay away from it or ask a member of the staff about it. It might be another griefer that put it there, but it might be something vital to the place you’re in.

Would you press the detonation button on a construction site? Of course not, so don’t click strange objects in SL ;)

Snowpaws

Snowpaws is an amazing store for new residents, from a price range of free – 280L$. They are very newcomer friendly with 24 Lucky letter boards, 6 Midnight Mania board and 4 Slap & Dash board. The store is modern looking and very open, the decor is minimal and with a beautiful atmosphere to shop. Snowpaws is also involved in many hunts in Second Life.

There aren’t any Mens clothes sadly, but you quickly forget about that when you their music of Pop and R&B distracts you for a second or you see your letter on one of the many prize boards.

Look at Koko

Sunday came around and I was doing window shopping Second Life, until I got an Instant Message from one of my friends telling me about a store. Obviously I jumped on the nearest Teleport over and landed in a place called Koko which has a main store, an out let and a newcomer friendly store.

The Newcomer store has free skins for those residents that are under 6 month old. Skins can also be bought for 99L$.  The store has also a variety of Eyelashes, Eyes and Hair which range from 10L$ – 50L$. The Main store has a great range of shoes and clothes that are priced between 49L$ – 300L$ and more. The Outlet store has shoes, gowns and other outfits from 49L$ – 99L$ although some of the items in this store are quite pricey.

All in all Koko is a great store for newcomers and older residents with lots of group gifts. It’s even better if you enjoy 80′s music while you’re shopping.

CMORE Amelia Pink  - 100L$

The CMORE store is just as awesome and affordable take a look!

(Special thanks to Lily Stoop and Jensien Danick beautifully for these pictures)

Here Comes the Bride: An SL Wedding

A few weeks ago I introduced the Weddings of Second Life, now its time to show what a Second Life Wedding looks like and how to get one. Of course you need to be engaged to be married first of all and you can’t do that without being an Second Life Relationship. If you haven’t realized yet time in Second Life moves fast and as soon as you first that special someone you share a connection with. It isn’t long before you are asking her/him for their hand in marriage. Here is the Second Life Wedding/ Partnering of June Carlson and Smorkola Resident very much in love allowed us to document their Second Life Wedding. This is the Second Life Wedding that has been done on a Budget, using only clothes from the store Grumble Grumble and their wedding venue Eversong. We used the gift cards that are already available through the in store Mini & Midnight Mania boards which are available to Grumble’s ever-growing shoppers.

Grumble Chapel 750L$

As Bride and Groom stand at the aisle exchanging their vows to each other you can see that the traditional ceremony in Second Life isn’t much different from a real life one. Bride Maids, Maid of Honor  with the best man and grooms men with families on each side.

Usually the Bridal parties’ outfits would cost a bit more than 1000 dollars each:

Satin Cascade Cocktail Dress (Pink) : 125L$

Cascade Gown ( White) : 150L$

Taking to the dance floor the Groom men’s change their outfits for a more less formal vest suit:

Men’s vest ( different colours) : 85L$

Men’s dress shoes : 60L$

Complete suit (from original photograph) 300L$

The most expensive thing in the whole wedding is meant to be the wedding dress. Not in this one. It looks awesome and happens to be the second most expensive thing in this wedding.

Victorian Gown White including Veil, Pearl Necklace and open toe Stiletto: 425L$

We will like to introduce to you, Mr and Mrs Carlson. The total tally for their wedding would be (without the Grumble gift cards) 2455L$.

Your Second Life wedding can cost as much or as little as you want. It all depends on how much money you have to spend.

(Big thanks to Grumble to letting is do our Grumble Wedding!)

Third Party Viewers updated

According to Modem World, some of the third party viewers have been updated to the new SL API and are now fully supporting SL again.

Three viewers are mainly affected by this, these are Restrained Love Viewer, Niran and Dolphin.

Among other things, RLV have patched the inventory bug to accept the new LL features, which is fixing the bug where you ended up nude sometimes and removed the ability for your master to force you to TP while you’re on busy mode, Niran have a revised Builders floater with a logical structure, making it a lot easier for builders and Dolphin have revised their snapshot features to make it easier for photographers.

These. and a lot more features can be found on their respective websites, RLV, Dolphin and Niran.

24 Hour Black Out In Protest To New Internet Censoring bill.

Well known sites such as Wikipedia will shut down their sites in less than 13 hours in protest to the next American internet Censorship bill.  The proposed legislation called the SOPA or Stop Online Piracy Act, was introduced in the United States House of Representatives in October of 2011 by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar Smith and a group of 12 co-sponsors.  The bill will change the way we use the internet  as well as companies who relay on it by barring online advertising networks and payment facilitator from doing business with website that might be involved with copyright infringement. It could also bar search engine websites from find them.

My Trip InWorldz

With such an amazing place as Second Life you never thought that there would be another one! For months now I’ve heard about another virtual world called InWorldz and decided today to give into my curiosity and check  this out. I have to say that InWorldz is a sister Virtual World to Second Life. It being that Second Life is its more popular and more beautiful older sister. It seems to be that IW is what Second Life was a few years ago.

There are several similarities which seems to be quite shocking, it almost as if you can step into InWorldz and when you’re ready you

Desert Island Welcome Area (InWorldz)

can step on a bus and travel across town to Second Life. In IW when you are “born” you land directly into an open welcome area which can be compared to Second Life’s Orientation Island and not it’s highly polished Welcome Island. InWorldz throws you into the mix and  to find your way you must enlist the help of InWorldz Mentors. Friendly people who help you to get settled by directing you to the various freebie stores that are located around the landing spot.

Like Second Life,You are able to use a Marketplace and use virtual currency called OS /I’z compared to SL’s Lindens (L$). Even the way you upload images is different ( Second Life requires you pay 10L$ to upload to images you have taken, while InWorldz is free).

InWorldz has opened a new door for us to explore and we at the Torch SL Guide will happy step through it.

So you wanna be a Neko…

Kitty as a Neko

So you wanna be a Neko…

My name is Kitty and many see me without my kitty attributes, i.e. ears and tail. They say well if you’re a neko it means you dress or act as a cat all the time. I have been a builder for a while so because of that I can’t always wear my kitty wear but I am still a neko. When a person decides they want to become a neko they first start looking around for the best places to purchase neko items. When the honest people will tell you names of stores in world. The thing is there are stores also on market place that can help you with some fantastic tails and ears. You can find some great skins and even some clothing designed for nekos. More often than not you can find more on marketplace for neko than what you can find in world not that there isn’t stuff in world too. Keep in mind that there loads of stores that sell neko products.

Now to be a good neko you need at least the desire to be neko as well as a good set of ears and a tail. Now to really be a neko you need to understand that being neko is not the same as being a cat furry. Furries are a different group in Second life and many nekos and furries would be insulted if someone mixes the terms up. Now I have been a neko since I started in Second Life and that was several years ago, that means that I have first-hand experience dealing with these things. The big thing to keep in mind is that not everyone accepts nekos and that is mostly because they don’t understand them. Keep in mind also that some people don’t really understand how to act as a neko. Nekos do have their own language and culture but they are pretty much like all part human part animals in Second Life.

One of the best things that a person can do when looking into being a neko is to talk to people who are nekos and learn from them. Anyone can contact me and ask for some advice on how to be a neko, and not just because I am one but because I enjoy making others happy. Now this article is just the first of a small series of articles that I will be doing on several sub-cultures here in Second Life.  I will also cover the basics of getting yourself set up as a vampire, an inu (like a neko only doglike), kitsune, and many others. If anyone who reads this has special requests for a sub-culture that is not being covered feel free to IM, notecard, or even email me and I will post one as soon as I can. In the meantime please keep reading and I will see all again in my next article on being a neko in second life.

Smooth Jazz at Bella Vida Jazz Club

The sounds of the decades are flowing through the walls of this Jazz Club. One thing you have to love about SL is that it is a very musical place. Every where you look you can find, clubs, and pubs that range musically, from classic rock to modern, from blues to hip hop, from classical to jazz all are available in Second Life. We have looked at classic rock, urban and Metal clubs before., but never a Jazz Club. Personally I am a firm lover of Jazz and my first SL Jazz club will forever be Phatcats, but that review will come sometime later. For now lets concentrate on Bella Vida Jazz Club.

Smooth Jazz of the Decades flow through this amazing club, I happen to come to this club on a day that there was a live artists. The fabulous and funny Wytchwhisper Sadofsky, who lit up the stage. When there aren’t any live artists running around being just incredible and making you tap your feet to their tunes, Bella Vida slows down with the sounds of the old favourites, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and new favourites like Norah Jones.

Any good club must have friendly people and Bella Vida is OK in that department. If you are a music lover and want a place with a relaxing atmosphere this is the place for you.
