Exodus The New SL Viewer

Exodus is a new third-party viewer to join the Second Life downloadable viewer family. It is the first in a new generation of viewers which is modelled after the default viewer 3. While it is similar there are a few differences that make this viewer unique in its own rights.

Exodus Viewer Beta first look.

Similarities to the vanilla viewer are cosmetic, the bottom bar, has all the same thumbnails that makes it easy to use for residents who are familiar with the Lindens default V3. The left bar is a lot longer, with the seven original main thumbnails and six added extras including Raid Advisor, Exodus Preferences, the original Preferences, Redraw, and Tools. Along with its many new features, this beta includes a function that informs users when a new resident has entered a region. This is a push beyond the already popular Radar function in other viewers such as Phoenix, Firestorm and Singularity. It seems unclear how long this new viewer will be able to keep these functions in due to the new Linden Labs Policy that puts restrictions on third-party viewers. Since Exodus is still in its beta state, maybe it will not give into the policy just yet.

Phoenix Viewer will Have Mesh Support?

According to Jessica Lyon, one the developer of Second Life third party viewer Phoenix/Firestorm, announced that their Phoenix Viewer might have Mesh support. Thou Viewer1-based viewers is supposed to be unable to hold mesh support, recent development with the Cool VL viewer, developed by Henri Beauchamp who is an avid fan of Viewer1, the technology for mesh in Viewer1 is now a real possibility.

There are a few things to concider thou. Phoenix is still a has-been project, and the development team is still directing their focus on Firestorm and will therefore not have support for Phoenix in the future. This is because Viewer1-based viewers are already on life support and the work with retrofitting the V1-based viewers is way much more than it would take to build new viewers based on V2 and V3. What took 9 months to do on V1 took only 2 weeks to do on Firestorm.

Another issue is that mesh requires SSE2, a protocol not supported by older computers, so a final Phoenix Viewer without mesh will also be released until you with older computers can upgrade. By then you should also have a computer good enough for Firestorm and Viewer2/3.

Mesh Viewers – Where are they?

We have talked a lot about what mesh is, but not how you can experience it. Therefore I’ve taken the liberty of compiling this list of mesh-able viewers for you, just click the name for a link to the download page.

Viewer3 The standard SL viewer from Linden Labs. Great for newcomers, but it isn’t as customizable as the other viewers and it can be a bit unstable at times. At the moment one of the only viewers that can upload mesh.

Firestorm 3.x The next step in the evolution of the Phoenix Viewer. Powerful, but still in the beta stage, so it isn’t as stable as other viewers. Constantly updated and very customizable.

Kirstens Made for snapshots, machinima and other graphically heavy projects, this viewer was one of the first third party viewers to support mesh. This version is the final version thou, as the developer have discontinued the project, but it can upload mesh, so it might be a good alternative to V3.

Dolphin Viewer 3 The most stable viewer that supports mesh so far, and it have great customizability too.

Cool VL Proud to be ahead of LL on many bugfixes, Cool VL attempts to go beyond the standard viewers.

Stay tuned for the updated list as more viewers gets support for mesh.

e-Tek; Everything for builders

Teleporters to and from every department

e-Tek Main Store

Owner: Frankwhiteaka Blanco

You have been in-world for a while now, started to learn some things and have decided you like building things, but you can’t do everything yourself… Don’t despair, that’s why we have e-Tek.

e-Tek is a complete builders store, with anything you might need for your build. It’s actually a collection of stores, each with its own specialty. Among others we have PRIM-TEK, one of my favourites, that sells all kinds of sculpted prims, most of them with full permissions and SCRIPT STORE, wich is pretty self explanatory.

The place a newcomer might be interested in is FREEBIE FACTORY, an old abandoned factory, where the old owner “forgot” a lot of crates filled with goodies, not only for builders. Among  others we have a crate with over 200 pieces of clothes, a crate filled with vampire-stuff and a survey-machine where you can earn a few lindens by taking surveys online. Well worth a check-out, even if you’re not into building.

Everything sold at e-Tek has resell rights, which means if you buy that tip jar script to put in your DJ-set, you can still sell the DJ-set of you wish. You could skip the whole building part and just go around buying everything you need at e-Tek and put it together, but don’t expect to earn anything from that, because the price for the simplest things might go well over 2000 lindens if you do it this way. Each component can be bought for a pretty cheap penny thou, so don’t be afraid to check it out.

There’s also a lot of building help for sale here, like a fully equipped builders platform that saves a lot of time if you’re

Pretty inventive buildings

building a lot. No matter what you’re building, this platform will make your life easier, with features such as Mega Prim-rezers, sculptie-rezers and chat activated positioning. The platform also work as a vehicle, you can fly it around, wich is pretty convenient if you want it up high in the air.

If you look at their marketplace store you’ll find a bunch of freebie scripts (that’s how I found the store ^_^), pretty simple, but if you don’t know how to script they might be very useful.

Facilities: Teleporter in every department, survey stations, sandbox

Pricerange: 0-2000+ (depending on what you’re buying)

Lag: 2-4 (mostly lag free)

Music: N/A (No music here)

Newbie Friendliness: 5 (You don’t need to know much more than what you’re looking for, but don’t expect any help if you don’t know)

Personal Rating:  6 (I love the things they sell, but the price can be a bit steep)
