Second Life Walkthrough: How to Get Lindens in SL? ( How do I get a job?)

Second Life has its own, very active, economy and currency. It is called the Linden Dollar (L$) and is about 0.01USD = 1L$. Time  for a few FAQ (or Frequently Asked Questions)

Why do I need Lindens?

To buy goods and services, such as clothes and a place to live.

How do I receive Lindens?

There are two ways:

1) Buy Lindens from the Second Life website using real money. You can do this by signing in to the Second Life website (using your SL username and password), go to your Dashboard, then to buy. It will ask you how much you want to purchase noting that the minimum allowed is at least 500L$ or 3.00USD.

2) You can get a job in world. There are several jobs that you can do in Second life. You can find these jobs through Job Agencies in world.( Search Job agencies). You can also create items to sell for Lindens or open your own business.

What kind of businesses/jobs are there in Second Life?

There are several jobs/businesses you can become involved in. The most common jobs are available through clubs and other music based establishments  , working as a DJ, Host/Hostess, and Dancer. There are others jobs that are less common such as Managers, Assistants, Models, Writers etc.

Businesses include Clothes Designer,Builder, Script Writer, Club Owner, Property Owner, Blogger (Fashion, News, Music & Destinations). These are jobs that takes a lot of commitment, so if you do not have the time and don’t want the stress the most frequent jobs would be more ideal for you. Some jobs, particularly the most common ones, have a promotion system (Start at the bottom and work your way to the top) but this depends on the owners.

How do I find work?

Job agencies are a great way to find jobs. There are tons Job centres and agencies for you to find work. Most jobs require you to fill out an application form and send it to the employers.

What are employers looking for?

Many employers are looking for Reliable employees, someone who will show up when they say they will and do their job well. As a result many employers will not hire you until you are 30 days old and in Second Life on a regular basis.

There are some jobs that will need experience and even training. Being a DJ in SL will require you to have training and experience (There are schools and help guides out there that specialize in  DJ training). Hosting is another job that requires training,  most clubs will offer to train you since  Hosts need  to use different marketing equipment to pull customers in.

Stretching far into the distance, it is filled with peace and quiet, cafes, pubs, and even castles. If you can’t be bothered to walk, you could always take a ride on the Pods that runs around all of Mainland.

Created by Second Life Residents Inuyasha Meiji and Silverfox ‘Giniji’ Rainbow. It is the perfect spot for those who would love to share their interest with ancient Japanese culture. Here you can relax by the sea as the music stream takes your away on an oriental journey. You can you go fishing, take a stroll around the village, watch a friendly combat in the local dojo, or even enjoy the local cruise (Yes there is traditional Japanese food here. You can’t eat it but adds to the immersive experience. It will have you craving for the real thing though, so be warned :) .). The Romantic Spots of Second Life: Ajax’s Romance Garden

It’s that time again, last year around this time we talked about relationships in Second Life. We gave our page to three couples who wanted to share their stories about meeting each other and falling in love in the virtual world. Well this year, we thought we would look at the Romantic spots of Second Life, the places where couples go to relax and enjoy their relationship. Since our Haunting of Second Life series was so popular, we are going to do the same, but this time adding a few pictures along with the articles.

First up is the magical garden, Ajax’s Romance Garden, one of the first romantic spots in Second Life that you are likely to visit (since it’s on the destination guide). With love songs streaming 24/7 this is the perfect spot to bring your loved one on a date. There are events in the Romance Garden ballroom, you’ll have to join the group to find out more information. Why is it called a Romance Garden? Well that is easily answered with these pictures be low.

Culture in Second Life: Art in Second Life (AKA The Arrival By Rose Borchovski)

The one thing many users of Second Life enjoy is the fact that you can be creative in that world. The ability to build, create clothes and content is what brings many users to the Linden Labs created world. When a new user views SL’s Destination section on the website, 9 times out 10 there will be art pieces on the Featured or Editor’s Pick list. Here is one piece of art called The Arrival by Second life Resident Rose Borchovski:

“I grew up in a small village on the edge of the sea. Once every few years a big fish (small whale) would strand itself on our beach. And that was an enormous event: THE ARRIVAL, this giant big fish lying on the beach, its weight made it impossible to breath, longing for the water, overheated by its own fat, trapped in the sand, slippery and smelly. We would climb all over it, standing on top of its belly, poking it with sticks, jumping up and down for pictures, while the whale was slowly dying under our feet. The beach would turn into a fancy fair, good business for local kibbling (warm fish) and hot chocolate sellers.”

- Rose Borchovski

This art piece jumps right into surrealism, with its use of  mannequin children, fishes, eyes and television sets, a carnival, penguins and other props to illustrate this story. Visitors are asked to have sound and to turn their volume up since sound is a part of the art piece. Along the way visitors are given gifts to take away, souvenirs of their time there. It’s worth looking around, if not for its surreal take on art then for its interactivity.

The Torch Interpretation:

Chris C: My interpretation is rather that it is about growing up, the big fish is a metaphor for adulthood and the little fish is the childhood. The child doesn’t want to grow up, so she “kills the fish” by keeping her childishness intact, but the big fish will always eat the little fish. In the end, she finds a way to keep young at heart even thou she is an adult, and realizes the dead fish is not her fault, it is ok.

Kennie M: I think It’s about the lost of innocence, the girl did something that she was ashamed of, probably something that took her innocence away, whether murder or abuse. It’s an mephtor for what happened to her. A big fish eats a little fish could be people or a person is  taking advantage of people (or person) who can’t take care of them selves like children or the elderly or business. They killed the big fish and felt guilty. If its a big company or something, it ended wrong and someone was killed or , someone went out of business or it caused something very bad to happen
