Second Life Walkthrough: How to Get Lindens in SL? ( How do I get a job?)

Second Life has its own, very active, economy and currency. It is called the Linden Dollar (L$) and is about 0.01USD = 1L$. Time  for a few FAQ (or Frequently Asked Questions)

Why do I need Lindens?

To buy goods and services, such as clothes and a place to live.

How do I receive Lindens?

There are two ways:

1) Buy Lindens from the Second Life website using real money. You can do this by signing in to the Second Life website (using your SL username and password), go to your Dashboard, then to buy. It will ask you how much you want to purchase noting that the minimum allowed is at least 500L$ or 3.00USD.

2) You can get a job in world. There are several jobs that you can do in Second life. You can find these jobs through Job Agencies in world.( Search Job agencies). You can also create items to sell for Lindens or open your own business.

What kind of businesses/jobs are there in Second Life?

There are several jobs/businesses you can become involved in. The most common jobs are available through clubs and other music based establishments  , working as a DJ, Host/Hostess, and Dancer. There are others jobs that are less common such as Managers, Assistants, Models, Writers etc.

Businesses include Clothes Designer,Builder, Script Writer, Club Owner, Property Owner, Blogger (Fashion, News, Music & Destinations). These are jobs that takes a lot of commitment, so if you do not have the time and don’t want the stress the most frequent jobs would be more ideal for you. Some jobs, particularly the most common ones, have a promotion system (Start at the bottom and work your way to the top) but this depends on the owners.

How do I find work?

Job agencies are a great way to find jobs. There are tons Job centres and agencies for you to find work. Most jobs require you to fill out an application form and send it to the employers.

What are employers looking for?

Many employers are looking for Reliable employees, someone who will show up when they say they will and do their job well. As a result many employers will not hire you until you are 30 days old and in Second Life on a regular basis.

There are some jobs that will need experience and even training. Being a DJ in SL will require you to have training and experience (There are schools and help guides out there that specialize in  DJ training). Hosting is another job that requires training,  most clubs will offer to train you since  Hosts need  to use different marketing equipment to pull customers in.

What is your job? How long have you been doing it? I am a Doctor at a Maternity Clinic on and off for 2 years

A little back ground of you place of work.  What do they do? How long have been doing it for?  We are maternity doctors with real life medical back grounds. We are not real life doctors but we have worked as nurses or nursing assistants in the medical profession.

How did you get into that field of work? Well I always found that the clinic was filled with great people and it was something I knew I would enjoy doing with in Second Life more than anything else i had done in the past.

Do you need any specific requirements to do what you do? The owner of the clinic requires us to have real life medical backgrounds. Other Clinics may vary.

Do you have a regular salary? If so how much is that? I do have a regular salary but the amount I wish to be kept to myself.

Do you have any tips or words of wisdom to give newbies who are interested in doing your job? Have lots of patients (no pun intended). Have a loving nature, be respectful of others.

Modeling In Second Life

For those of you who haven’t realised yet you can pretty much do any thing that you put your mind to in Second Life. From writing a blog about Second Life clothing, to making clothes and selling them to even showing off these clothes to others, Modelling is a very popular industry in Second Life. Just like real life it opens a different world that isn’t normally seen by regular users.

In Second Life there are four types of Modelling: Runway, Print Model, Editorial and Live Model. Live models, refers to the models that are used in clothing stores who greet customers as they land. These are the most common to be seen by other SL users. While Runway, Print Model, and Editorials are more exclusive and require practice. For these there are a lot of Modelling schools and academies, that teach you what you need to learn about being a model. The Torch SL Guide got an insight into this industry by talking to the top modelling academy in Second Life, InWorld Inc which is also a part of the Second Life’s Journalism industry with InWorld Magazine. We were able to interview Maya Sharpshire, the CEO of InWorld, who has been a part of the Modeling industry since 2009 when she opened her first Model Academy called POSH Management, this evolved into today’s InWorld Model Institute.

Any one can be a model, but not everyone can be famous it depends on how hard they work.” Says the InWorld CEO, “My main vision is to help create new and fresh models for SL because there currently a lot of famous faces out there but eventually they will need new ones on the scene. I just love to teach new models, it’s a part of the challenge of keeping everything new and fresh and the truth is as a model you can’t have much money. The Modeling and Fashion Industries in Second life are both number one and by becoming a model you will have a lot opportunities opened to up to you. If you work hard enough maybe one day you can be Mr or Miss Virtual World. “

InWorld is always willing to help newcomers who are interested in learning how to walk down the virtual catwalk. “It is hard and the modelling world in Second Life is just as competitive as it is in real life, so we do what we can to help those who are dedicated and willing to put in the work that is needed to become successful.”

Lessons with InWorld cost a wooping 5000Lindens (13 GBP or 20 USD) for regular classes, according to Maya, there has been talk about giving free classes but nothing has been decided yet. Fingers crossed it happens because you never know which newcomer could be the next big Second Life Mr and Miss Virtual World.

Working in Second Life: Enjoy Life Jobs Agency

Like many newcomers to Second Life you may find yourself looking for a place either to get a job or earn a few Lindens. It is not as easy

Start your Second Life with Enjoy Life Jobs

as some may think to get a job on Second Life when you are a freshly made avatar. One reason is that people do not want to hire a person who is new on SL because of their inexperience with the game or because they do not think that a newcomer will stick at it hard when trying to predict what goes on in other people’s minds. However, there is a place that newcomers can come and get a job or find work in other locations. That place is called Enjoy Life Job Agency and the staff are really friendly and helpful to newcomers.

  • Enjoy Life Job Agency is a great place to visit because of all the things they have to offer. They offer low-cost to no-cost clothes to make you look less like a newcomer and more like someone who has been on Second Life for a while. Having a refined look and a good style on Second Life is really important and can help you land a fantastic job in a club or other place of business. Enjoy Life Job Agency can really help you get your start. They offer both greeter and model positions that can help you get started in the second life. They pay a small amount for a worker (four hours of work for one hundred lindens) not bad for a newcomer in Second Life. This is a great thing for newcomers to earn and save up to make their appearance ready for places that require a better look . Many places will not take on workers under 30 days old and sometimes even 60. The Enjoy Life way enables you get your foot in the door with experience in modeling or greeting and the time you need to be online.

So. If you are new to Second Life, need a job, and maybe some freebies, Enjoy Life Job Agency is one of many places to get started. Virtual London Fashion Week Summer 2011 – Day 1

As with the spring edition, The Torch SL Guide is at location to cover Virtual London Fashion Week Summer. Starting out with Seldom Blue, a top-quality swimwear line was showcased on stage. The tension in the air was only matched by the fashionable models. Seldom Blue is owned by IndigoBlue Dagostino, a woman with a passion for exclusive women’s wear. She designs everything from sexy lingerie and swimwear to fantastic bridal gowns.

The second show was from MEB, that showcased some of their newest summer dresses. MarieElena Barbosa has really outdone herself this time. The theme here was sleek, sexy and suave.

MANBA came as a strong third act, with their cyber-inspired, elegant clothing by Mew Denimore. Jaws dropped as these awesome summer outfits was displayed by ELEGANCIA Agency’s professional models. It was their first fashion show in London, but Mew was very pleased with it. In her store, MANBA, she has freebies and discounts for under 100L$, and she adds more as time goes.

The leader of ELEGANCIA, Federica Galtier, had time for a short talk between shows, and she was more than pleased by her agency’s

Federica Galtier, CEO and Owner of ELEGENCIA

debut performance.  “I am overwhelmed with excitement that we have our agencies first show out of the way and I look forward to the next 17″ she said to our reporter. Several months of hard work paid off and Federica stated “I’m very excited and proud of my team”.

The verdict from the crowd was unanimous, everyone was cheering as every single model walked the catwalk and everyone we talked to were excited and said this show was way beyond what they expected.

NRRA Race Track; The officials have spoken – Man Week

We were at NRRA to check things out at the race track. Both Morphman and Izzie tried racing, just as Sven had done before and we talked a bit with two of the officials there, Yvanna Schuster and Tresbon TooCool, and they were kind enough to let us ask some questions.

Yvanna Schuster, interviewed by Izzie:

Yvanna Schuster

How long have you been in Second Life?

3 years

What is your job? How long have you been doing it?

I am a Track official at the NRRA and have been doing it for about 8 months

A little back ground of you place of work.  What do they do? How long have been doing it for?

The NRRA is sl’s Premium Drag Racing strip, we hold drag races just like in RL..with some  pretty large linden pots..I have been here at the track for 1 year and doing my job as a track official for 8 months.

How did you get into that field of work?

My partner who has since passed away took me to the NRRA he was their graphics person at the time. I was hooked from the second I learned how to race.

Do you need any specific requirements to do what you do?

You need to know how to race and have a pretty good understanding of the rules of drag racing on SL and at the NRRA

Do you have a regular salary? If so how much is that?

No, not a regular salary, we get paid by tips and  part of the racers entrance fee which is 125L also goes to the host (Head Official) for the night. Some racers can be very generous so some nights you can walk away with 500L

Do you have any tips or words of wisdom to give newbies who are interested in becoming a part of Sl’s growing Car and Drag Racing Organisation?

I would tell them be patient, come down and get on the demo bike and practice we are all there to help you if you need it..any questions any track official can answer, and if they can’t answer they are willing to find the answer for you.  It is also important that when you are being trained that you listen and not get frustrated, after you learn how to race it is fun and can make you some linden.

Tresbon TooCool, interviewed by Morphman:

Tresbon TooCool

What is your job at the NRRA racing track?

Well i race of course but i also do the graphic work including photo and car textures.
I also build stuff including that 3 story sim wide showroom and stage and some car parts.
Nina does a great job on the cars. going from an empty shell to the nice cars that you saw in the showroom.

How did you get into that line of work?

lol, To be honest I don’t even know. I think I made a sign for Nina,  then more signs, then eventually I did logos and other stuff while Scrap was busy painting the cars.

How did you first hear of the racing community?

I had a friend that was a dj at the track. I wasn’t interested in it at the time. My path to the NRRA is an odd one.
It all started with me having a Harley Davidson motorbike, it wasnt allowed on a sim so i went to find another bike. I ran into this guy from London :) and he showed me his cars including a top fuel. I saw the Bugatti and bought that and 2 bikes, then a few other cars.
I hopped on the track and it was a blast, but i could only get it to 9th gear and I wanted to see how fast it could go and found myself at the NRRA. My car didn’t have the settings so this girl named Larrisa taught me how to drag race. I joined Speed 4 Pleasure racing team and has been there ever since.

You have been helping us out a lot when we have been at the track, do you do this for everyone?

Oh yes, if you hit the sim I will teach you how to drag race.
I think its something that everybody should try out at least once. It’s funny how something so simple can give you an adrenaline rush.
At NRRA we try to keep things fresh instead of the same old thing over and over again. The other thing is that people don’t think about it but driving is an actual job. The amount of the pots have paid tiers for some. We have one race that pays a nice amount of lindens just to move on to the next round.

How often do you have races with cash prizes?
Minimum twice a day. We’ve done as many as 8 races in a day.
There’s an entrance fee of 125L$ that pays for the pot. NRRA people are a generous bunch so we often add to the pot.
Weve had over 20k in donations alone some races, that’s not too shabby.

What do you have to do to become a member of a drag racing team?

Well, most teams recruit, but since i train a lot i try to see if the other teams need people. If you have a group you can also start a team yourself and that can be lucrative for the team owner.
I’m always looking for groups to come on down to the track.

What does it take to become a pro drag racer according to you?

Okay, to me, I think it’s consistency. If you get consistent at hitting that reaction time (rt) of under .05 seconds you are a pro
I will give you a good example. There’s a drag racer that was trained within minutes he was constantly doing .04s, he did 7 in a row.
Luager, another official, and I were standing there like whoaaa. He eventually started doing .02s. within 24 hrs he took 1st place.
Everybody has a chance to win with practice

Can you still profit from racing if you don’t have the reactions for racing yourself?

Here’s the thing, all the races aren’t open pro. Races like comp elim, gasser and others work on a slow 3 light system, so you can get a better chance of timing with those. Everybody can earn a 500L$ commission.

What do you need to start racing?
An NRRA car :)
There are a few cheaper cars allowed but if you want the best you pay for it.

Do you have any tips for newbies that want to become drag racers?
Like Nike just do it
All they have to do is ask to trained

WIN - Arena

WIN Boxing – Man Week

Warrior Instinct Nations (WIN) Boxing

The WIN Wall of Fame

WIN is the oldest and most respected boxing association in SL. They are often considered to be the only true boxing association. They hold televised boxing matches, championships and weekly matches with live audience.

The boxers are more active in their roles while boxing than in, for example, the SLNFL, it’s an actual fighting system they use, where the skill of the boxer is key to winning the match.

The fighters can participate in events, such as title matches, for cash prizes, fame and recognition throughout all of SL. Most often these games have a buy-in price, but the prize money is way over the buy-in. If you think you got what it takes, you should have the money to back it up.

They use two fighting systems, Aver and Fever, where Aver seems to be the more popular one. Most often, the winner of grand title matches are the ones who use both. This, along with eventual buy-ins is the only real cost for the fighter and the ones that does well often gets more than enough to support themselves.

There’s also a lot of free-to-enter events with cash prizes too.

I met up with Calvinizm2g Quan, the Head Avatar in Charge of WIN and asked him about boxing and WIN:

Calvinizm2g Quan, the Lord of the Ring himself

How did you get into SL boxing?

Well I stumbled across boxing in my first few days in SL and got hooked and have not looked back since.

How did you become Head Avatar In Charge?

Hahaha well the HAIC came to me , I never looked for it. I just was willing to help WIN wherever help was needed and opportunities kept coming to me and the rest is history. I’m actually humbled to be in the spot I am now, and know its not an easy job, and that I also have great people working behind the scenes with me to make it all work out great. My strength is being a visionary and being able to see how to put what I see in my mind down so that it comes to life. It’s always a plus when you can have people that buy into that, and help you achieve the things you see.

How much preparations is there before each match?

Well there’s different levels to have fight event to happen. First you need to book the fighters and have them agree to fight at that particular event time. Then you need the proper staffing to be able to work the event. We use announcer, ring girls, security and radio DJ at our events to bring them to life for our fans. Then you have to consider the fighters preparation in training before match which varies depending on how hard a fighter likes to work and also their availability to be online before that fight happens.

Is this the only boxing arena in SL?

There have been tons of different organizations to pop up around SL. I’ve seen so much come and go that I’ve honestly have lost count. It’s truly an honour to stand at the helm of the oldest and most consistent one of them all. I was listening to a radio show that was showing the difference between players that are great and that are legendary. The legends are the ones who make such and impact that people mimic or copy them. Look at the Micheal Jordans and Tiger Woods of the world to see that point. Great athletes had good stats but never transcended the game they played. I look at WIN as a company in the legendary status because so many have tried to duplicate or took certain aspects of it to start theirs. I’ve grown much to take this as more of a compliment then anything else. Its actually people indirectly being inspired by what WIN has done even if they don’t want to admit it lol.

What does it take to become a boxer in SL?

Well at WIN all you need to do is get one of our boxing systems Fever or Aver or even both. The ones who do both become eligible to possibly become an Undisputed Champ. Other then that we like to hook people up with coaches to help speed their learning curve, and soon as they are seen fit we get them in the ring.

What does it take to become a boxing trainer in SL?

Well the best trainers are the ones who don’t hold back and give their all to seeing people get better. I think patience is an obvious trait needed due to the fact people have different learning curves. I mean it took me 10 minutes to figure how to activate the gloves and I ended up winning both Heavyweight Belts, so imagine if my coach at the time gave up on me. I’ve also come to realize when you give your all to people it actually makes you a better coach and fighter, and that’s a WIN WIN ;) .

What do you have to offer the newcomers in SL?

Well we offer newcomers a chance to make our place their home. All are welcome at WIN. We don’t like drama at all so as long as a person is not trying to start that here all the time they should take the time. Boxing is our main thing but we offer so much more as well to appeal to a lot of different audiences. So don’t be surprise to see us doing karaoke, dance offs, date auctions, mud wrestling and much more.

DJLONDON

London Week: Jobs in SL; DJ

We have a double feature for you today. Not one, but two  profiles on DJing in London. Eva Adored and Kyle Enimo is London’s two top DJ’s and they’re more than happy to share what they know.

Eva Adored

DJ Eva Adored

Job Title: DJ
Rezday : March 8
How long have you been in Second Life Eva?

I just survived my first year of SL.
What is your job? How long have you been doing it?

I’m a DJ, I’ve been doing it for about seven months now.

A little back ground of you place of work? How long have you been doing it for?
I’ve been DJing in London for seven months. I mostly work at Club Capital in Mayfair, but I have also worked at 5th Ave in Knightsbridge and also at the former Rendezvous club in Kensington. At Capital we mostly play Top 40’s, and in addition to great tunes, the Lead Host (the amazing Wendlyn Portillo) and I like to give our guests a real show, we aim to entertain.

How did you get into that field of work?

Several months ago I was the manager of Rendezvous in Kensington and one night a DJ had to cancel due to some real life issues. It was a bit late in the day to look for a new one, so I decided to give it a try. I was quickly trained by two other amazing DJs, Stavros Jolbey and Thom Macbain (also a London DJ). After my first set I never looked back.
Do you need any specific requirements to do what you do?

Other than software, stream and a massive music collection, the next tool of the trade is personality. If you can engage with the listeners then you’re doing your job. Not all DJs can voice, but I prefer to. I think it helps the listeners to connect more with both the music and the environment in the club, which at Capital is extremely lively.
Do you have a regular salary? If so how much is that?

I am paid a salary, but that is confidential information between myself and my employer.

Do you have any tips or words of wisdom to give newbies who are interested in becoming a part of Sl’s DJing and Music Industry?

Yes, go for it! If you hear a DJ whose style you like in particular, and I don’t mean music, then send them an IM or notecard. Most of the DJs I know are very friendly people and happy to help anyone interested get started.

Kyle Enimo

Name: Kyle Enimo

Job: DJ at the clubs around London, mostly Club Capital

How long have you been in Second Life Kyle?

Since 2006, that’s how long? 5 years…

What is your job? How long have you been doing it?

I am a dj and have been doing it for the past four years

Can you give a little background about Capital and your work there?

Capital is a london based club and all djs are different.

When in London I change up my style. Like i was actually in a europe club. I change with my surroundings.
Capital is different in that the people are always there for a good time, not just contests.
I play trance and club music. I make my own club mixes, mainly of todays top 40

How did you get into DJing?

I love music. I love all music whether its rock, oldies, jazz, blues, classical, pop, hiphop and you can guess from that
I can mix and blend to my atmosphere
Djing is like performing, it’s an art and it takes a person who loves music, can do what people want and pelase a crowd
So i jumped on and started djing at clubs with no traffic and horrible tips, then other club owners saw my potential and then from there it grew to weddings and special events

Do you need any specific requirements to do what you do?

You need ability to get music
You need software like Fruity Loops to make your own mixes, which is what i use and you need good software like Sam Broadcaster and you need to be able to use voice and take requests

Do you have a regular salary? If so how much is that?

At london sims I make 600 a gig, in some clubs i make 250 a gig
I make anywhere from 1000-5000

Do you have any tips or words of wisdom to give newbies who are interested in becoming a part of Sl’s growing music industry?

If you love music and have a passion for it and like being the center of the crowd, dj.
When you’re the dj you control that crowd, your job is higher than a host, because your voice hosting pretty much.
It’s a good job, but don’t do it if you don’t enjoy it.
I see djs everyday, I’ve made requests and took them like 30 mins to get a track on and I was the only on requesting and sometimes I get we don’t take requests.
Me,  it takes me bout 40 secs to get a request in que. I can have 5 requests lined up in a row in about one and a half minute, but lots of djing means a big library of music.
